VANTAGE

Tualatin Parks District, Portland, OR
2015

  • Vantage is located along a two-mile trail and park spanning a corridor including Bethany Lake and the Rock Creek Parkway west of Portland (OR). The sculptures will be relocated to different footings periodically over a 10-year period. At the midsection of each sculpture there is an integrated band that rotates horizontally. This ASB and stainless-steel band houses an optical scope that viewers can use to scan the landscape around the sculpture. The scope inside each of the sculpture’s bands is calibrated with a depth of field and height adjustment so that another of the sculptures can be found within its field of view. There are also limiters integrated into the horizontal movement to prevent people from using the scopes to look into adjacent homes. Some of the footings for the sculptures are located directly on existing paths and others are located in more remote areas of the park. One of the goals of the project is to encourage people to walk between the sculptures and explore different areas of the park.
