Core is installed aboard the Endurance, a new Polar Class 5 Icebreaker in the Norwegian Lindblad fleet. Designed to travel through ice year-round, this ship will marry luxury tourism and scientific research throughout the Arctic and Antarctica. The sculpture, Core, is inspired by what it might feel like to be inside sea ice, floating on the surface of the ocean. Cast in thin layers of resin, the suspended sculpture appears semi- opaque from the outside. Inside the sculpture, passengers can enter to have an immersive experience within the luminous core. The sculpture’s translucent material allows the shell of the sculpture to be understood as hundreds of light-emitting strata, evoking a sense of geologic time.
