Sage is suspended above the library’s central staircase connecting the first and second floors of the building.
The sculpture is inspired by the structure within the stem of the sagebrush Artemisia tridentate, a plant that grows widely within Central Oregon and Deschutes County. The sculpture echoes a horizontal cross section of structural growth rings that support the plant and intricate cell networks that draw water and nutrients to the plant from deep in the soil.
Made with salvaged Alaskan yellow cedar and riveted clear polycarbonate that we perforated, the sculpture is 10 feet high x 20 feet x 15.5 feet. The wood forms are all hollow to minimize weight.
Cate O’Hagan and Jason Graham led curation of the building. Mathew Albores and Ruth Baleiko, Miller Hull Architects. Gary Gill structural engineering. Redpoint and Kirby Nagelhout Construction facilitated installation.
