The sculpture is inspired by the expansion of western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) trees and the contraction of glaciers within Deschutes County. The sculpture takes the form of the surface of an alpine valley conflated with concentric growth rings of the interior of a western juniper. At the top of this undulating form there is an additional layer of perforated translucent forms inspired by a retreating glacier. This sculpture has led to a new series of five more related sculptures that we are beginning to make in the studio. Please see upcoming projects for more information about the new related works.
Juniper is 52 feet wide, 32 feet deep, and 26 feet high. It is made with salvaged Alaskan yellow cedar and perforated clear polycarbonate. It is suspended with 1200 1/32” stainless steel cables. The sculpture weighs just over 2000 pounds.
Cate O’Hagan and Jason Graham led the building's curation. Mathew Albores and Ruth Baleiko, Miller Hull Architects. Jared Lewis of Catena Consulting Engineers performed structural engineering. James Spence, Project Manager with Redpoint and Kirby Nagelhout Construction facilitated our installation. Scaffolding by Safway, Portland, OR. Grade Studio project fabrication leads: Alyssa Sheeres, Janelle Sopko and Sam Kuniholm. CAD design: Henry Cowdery and Matthew Soma. CNC Lead: Matthew Soma.
