Derived from a rubber cast of the human body stretched over a cylindrical frame, Fold is made up of thousands of hollow wood boxes bonded by translucent resin and is designed to be buried and altered by termites. In 2003, a search was begun to locate the most rapidly-acting termites. Test sections were buried at 16 locations in remote areas of Idaho, Utah, Washington, Arizona and Nevada. Buried in Central Idaho, it may take 15 to 20 years before the termites have sufficiently altered the sculpture and it is ready to be exhumed.

This sculpture was made in three variations. The first variation of Fold was buried in Northern Idaho in 2010. The second variation was divided into two parts. The larger upper part is installed at the King County Public Library in Duvall, Washington, and the smaller lower part is buried near the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. In 10-20 years, this smaller section will be exhumed and reunited with its other half in the library where it will then be permanently exhibited. A third variation of Fold was created with the desire to remake the original Fold so that it would relate more intrinsically to the specific landscape where the first version of Fold is buried. When the original Fold was made, it was unclear where it would be buried because tests were still underway to determine where the best site would be to bury it. The third Fold sculpture is an ode to the impossibility of revising the past and it will not be buried. Instead, it is meant to serve as a control sample that will reflect, but not actually engage the landscape.
