Bluestem is suspended inside the main entry atrium of the medical complex.
The sculpture is inspired by the anatomy of a single stem of Big Bluestem prairie grass (Andropogon gerardii) that is native to the site of the hospital and once grew widely in the region. The intricate structure of the sculpture is informed by the porosity and growth of cancellous bone.
The sculpture is carved from Alaskan yellow cedar. The interior of the sculpture is oriented with vertical grain and the exterior of the sculpture is oriented with horizontal grain. 30 feet high x 8 feet x 7 feet.
Building art collection curated by Bruce Scherting. Project manager Adam Cannon. Structural engineer Gary Gill.
